PREPARE YOUR NEXT MAKE
Start with the materials listed in your chosen pattern. Match the yarn and tools to the project rather than buying a new kit for every make.
Your project checklist
- Yarn
- Check the weight, fibre, required length and care instructions. Ball weights alone do not tell you how much length a replacement yarn contains.
- Needles
- Check the diameter in millimetres as well as the named size. Choose the needle type and length needed for the construction.
- Gauge
- Use the pattern’s specified stitch, measurement and finishing method when checking a swatch. Do not assume the recommended needle automatically produces the required gauge.
- Finishing
- Prepare the tools the pattern actually needs: yarn needle, scissors and any specified markers, holders or blocking equipment.
Materials for the lace scarf
Brooke Nelson’s original Column of Leaves scarf uses approximately 375 yards of worsted-weight yarn. The original PDF gives US 7 / 4.5 mm needles as its starting point. Different yarns and tension change the finished fabric.

Compare baby cardigan supplies
The four baby cardigan designs use different yarns, needle sizes and gauges. Choose one design before building a shopping list; there is no single materials list for the whole collection.
